Perioperative anaemia management is a key component of surgical Patient Blood Management (PBM), aimed at improving outcomes by identifying and treating anaemia across the surgical pathway—before, during, and after surgery.
Anaemia is common in surgical patients, and is associated with increased risk of complications, prolonged hospital stays, and increased reliance on blood transfusions. Proactive management helps optimise haemoglobin levels, minimise transfusion requirements, and enhance postoperative recovery.
This programme builds on national guidance and clinical best practice to support consistent, evidence-based anaemia care across NHS Wales.
