Quality measures have been introduced for a number of aspects of clinical and laboratory transfusion practice, for the purpose of benchmarking and quality improvement across Wales.
They align with the objectives of the BHNOG workstreams, and have been developed by the BHNOG, some in collaboration with the Welsh Blood Service.
The quality measures, in a lot in cases represented as KPIs (key performance indicators) are to be scrutinised at hospital transfusion committee and other relevant user, leadership and governance groups.
Monthly KPI reports are issued for red blood cell issues, red cell wastage (including O D negative) and platelet wastage.
